Please join us at the South Ferry Church in Narragansett for a series of community speaking programs. Pertinent to state, national and international issues and events, the speaking programs encompass a broad array of topics important in today’s ever-changing and challenging world.
Monday, August 21 – Joanne Pope Melisch – Associate Professor Emerita, University of Kentucky and Coordinating Committee, Center for Reconciliation of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. Ms. Melisch is the author of “Disowning Slavery: Gradual Emancipation and ‘Race’ in New England, 1780-1860”. She will inform us on the many levels and deep engagement of the businesses and culture of South County, RI in the institutions of slavery and the related slave trade in America’s 18th and 19th centuries and how that history has informed our modern-day society and race relations.
This presentation will begin in the Corless Auditorium on the Graduate School of Oceanography campus, across the street from the South Ferry Church, followed by a reception on the Knauss Terrace and small-group tours of the ISC in the lower level of the Ocean Science & Exploration Center Building.
